    Synopsis

A GIRL EASILY carried off by the wind.

An elderly widow whose husband died under strange circumstances.

An isolated dwelling that breeds fear.

Miranda has no recollection of where she came from—only that years ago, a gust of wind deposited her outside Bourne Manor. The Manor’s sole inhabitant, Wysteria Barrows, took Miranda in and promptly outfitted her with special boots—boots weighted with steel bars to keep her anchored to the ground. But aside from shelter and clothing, Miranda receives little warmth from the aging widow. The Manor, too, is a cold place, full of drafts and locked doors. Full of menace. Full of secrets.

Then one day a boy named Farley appears. Farley helps Miranda embrace her destiny with the wind . . . and uncover the Manor’s hidden past.

    Children's Literature

Years ago, Miranda was deposited outside Bourne Manor by a gust of wind. She did not know where she came from, so she was taken in by the Manor's sole inhabitant, Wysteria Barrows. Fitted with steel boots, the small girl was ordered to never leave the grounds—or even go outside. But when Wysteria falls ill, Miranda finally has the means to explore the mysterious mansion. What she finds are hidden rooms, long-kept secrets, and a legend about a treasure. She eventually meets a boy named Farley, who helps her see the spell that the mansion has on her when she is within its walls. With Farley's assistance, Miranda learns to challenge her overwhelming fear of the unknown. As she spends more time with him, she also realizes the potential she has—to fly! Conquering the wind comes naturally to her, and it is that ability that eventually rescues them just as the mansion—and its spells—burns to the ground. By incorporating magical realism, Murphy creates a whimsical book that will fascinate curious readers. With a somber and almost-depressing tone, Murphy helps readers experience the mystical pull that captured Miranda's soul, spirit, and heart. By conquering her fear, Miranda is able to experience freedom and uncover the truth about Wysteria's past. Murphy's well-written novel will bring hope to those who are overwhelmed, trapped, living in fear, or controlled by someone or something outside of themselves. Reviewer: Ashleigh Vanada

October 17, 2008: Kirkus Reviews wrote of Rita Murphy's newest novel Bird:"Echoes of Hawthorne's House of Seven Gables run through this tale, which abounds with literary allusions. While even precocious child readers may not hear them, they will adore the setting, Miranda's soaring, literary voice and the dreamy fantasy-meets-reality plot." Were they ever right! This is one book that will take your breath away. Like Murphy's debut novel "Night Flying", the metaphor of freedom and captivity are explored in a beautiful and lyrical narrative and the metaphor of flight is taken to a new and quite different level.

The character and plot move so seamlessly and the ending was such a surprise, I found myself surprised and captivated by the every page of the narrative. I am 46 years old and I have to say to readers out there THIS IS NOT JUST A TALE FOR YOUNG FOLKS! I was delighted and charmed by this book and to has much to say about learning how to use the gifts you have given and to "let the wind take you to your perfect destination". This book is a Winner!!!!
