      Synopsis

"Based on the true story of a shameful episode in North Texas history, Quakertown draws on the rich texture of the South - of the Pecan Creek running along the edges of Quakertown, the remarkable and rare white lilac, and of the rising tensions marking each nod and greeting."--BOOK JACKET.

Romantic. As emotionally driven as the movie Titanic....[Martin] can take your breath away.

August 04, 2008: I read this book because I was curious if there was an literature out there about my home town. This was a great representation of the dark history of Denton. The description of the town and historical accuracy were amazing!

August 02, 2003: I just 'happened' upon this book at the library and thought it sounded interesting so I checked it out. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. I found the characters rich and the history surrounding them riveting. What can be more captivating than 'forbidden love' especially between a black and a white? It's more than a love story though. This book captures a time when African-Americans were treated with disdain, often with tragic consequences, yet were able to somehow bear it with dignity. My respect for them couldn't help but go up several notches after I read this story. The only disappointment I had was in the ending. It seemed abrupt and not at all what I expected. Then again, given the time and place of the story I don't suppose my expectations were realistic.
