      Synopsis

      QUEEN OF HEARTS

Little witch-girls Chocolat and Vanilla are best friends, but only one of them can be Queen of the Magic World. To determine who deserves the title, they must go to the Human World and enter a strange competition. Whoever attracts the most human boys . . . wins!

Here’s how it works: When a boy falls for a witch-girl, she utters a few mystic words and the boy’s heart will be hers in jewel-like form. It may sound simple, but winning hearts is tricky business. While Chocolat had no problem enticing witch-boys with her forthright personality, human boys seem to be drawn to shy and modest girls like Vanilla. And to make matters worse, Chocolat is finding herself increasingly drawn to the cool and mysterious Pierre–who feels nothing for her! The girls had planned to be best friends forever, but both of them want to be Queen. Will their rivalry ruin their friendship?

Mai Taniyama is our guide through this gently creepy series about her boss, a ghost hunter named Kazuya Shibuya, who's in the business of liberating innocent citizens from supernatural infestations. Kazuya investigates psychic phenomena with his team of consultant monks and exorcists and, as this is a manga comic adhering to the usual teenage conventions, this expert exorcist is just 16 years old. The first case involves a haunted house and an evil doll that is a vessel for children who have died there in the past. Before their spirits are laid to rest, they wreak some serious havoc-furniture turned upside down, spontaneous fires, a pit in the middle of the living room-but eventually, all is put right, the spirits are soothed, and the family is safe. The second episode is more light-hearted, although it, too, involved a dead young girl. Spurned by her boyfriend when she was alive, the girl killed herself and vowed to make mischief among happy couples. This spirit is eventually soothed and laid to rest by the champion ghost hunters. With sprightly narrator Mai and an inventive series of ghostly villains, Ghost Hunt should entertain. (Jan.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

April 01, 2009: I am a 25 year old soccer mom, with a graduate level reading comprehension. But I have to admit I am in love with this series. I love the French terms. I love the extras dictionary at the end of the book. I love the history of the characters, and the secrets of the familiars. I love the fantastic history of the witch world as it unfolds. I love the art and the uber girly magic the 2 main players use throughout the book. Very cute, very fun, very addictive. Hands down my favorite series of manga. I hope it never ends. And I own ALOT.

May 04, 2008: Like the person below, this series has gone WAY downhill. It started out with a good plot: Two young witches competing to be the next queen of the Magical World, involving romance. But it's taken so many twists and turns that the original plot has been lost! And, come on! TEN YEAR OLDS IN LOVE WITH FOURTEEN YEAR OLDS!! It just doesn't work. Sorry Anno-San, but you dragged this story for too long.
