    Synopsis

Flint Lockwood, the eccentric young inventor of Swallow Falls, tells his side of the story in this Level 2 Ready-to-Read. After years of failed creations, Flint has possibly come up with a winner—a machine that can create rain showers of  food!

And after years of ignoring him, the townspeople now treat Flint like a hero, and ask him to make their favorite foods fall from the sky. But when the machine horribly malfunctions, Flint has to find a way to stop giant-sized food from destroying the world—before it's too late!

    Children's Literature

Like most movie tie-ins, this Ready-to-Read Level 2 chapter book leans heavily on the script of the 2009 animated feature, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Fans of the movie may enjoy the uber-cartoony art (the characters are depicted with enormous mouths, teeth and eyes) and the brisk but boring re-telling of the movie. Dialogue peppers the text and plenty of action adds spice. However, the plot is spoiled by a lack of transitions. The reader is jarred by jumps from one scene to the next. The inside and back covers heartily advertise other brands of movie tie-ins, the movie itself, and a video game based on the movie. There is a very small ad for the book by Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett that inspired the movie. Independent readers would be better off with the zesty original or any of the wonderful level 2 chapter books not based on a commercial venture. Reviewer: Candice Ransom
