    Synopsis

From the author of the international bestseller Incendiary comes a haunting novel about the tenuous friendship that blooms between two disparate strangers---one an illegal Nigerian refugee, the other a recent widow from suburban London.

The New York Times - Caroline Elkins

…immensely readable and moving …While the pretext of Little Bee initially seems contrived —two strangers, a British woman and a Nigerian girl, meet on a lonely African beach and become inextricably bound through the horror imprinted on their encounter—its impact is hardly shallow. Rather than focusing on postcolonial guilt or African angst, Cleave uses his emotionally charged narrative to challenge his readers' conceptions of civility, of ethical choice.

December 07, 2009: Little Bee written by Chris Cleave is a story of a Nigerian teenager who has struggled tremendously with her country and finds a way to Britain in hopes of saving herself. After two horrific years in a detention center she is released into Britain. Her life completely turns around and she is re-aquatinted with Sarah, a British magazine editor. The two women help each other cope with the unique trials that fall into their life. Little Bee paints a picture of what happens when the two women's life collides and a friendship is built that can not be broken.

This novel demonstrates the true happiness that can emerge from enduring difficult situations. Although Cleave's writing was somewhat difficult to understand, once I caught on to his style, I found that he did a fantastic job of keeping the flow while changing perspectives from chapter to chapter. As I began to read Little Bee, I was surprised by the melancholy nature of the book. It's heavy tone is not what one would expect from a book that looks so cheerful. Although it had a heavy tone, Little Bee is still inspiring and thought-provoking.

The characters Chris Cleave has created were key to giving the book meaning; the two women's personalities contrasted with each other, which gave the book an interesting and engrossing twist. Without that strong element of friendship throughout the entire story, the book would have had a weak story-line. Little Bee became a part of Sarah's life and showed her that happiness is easy to find in the middle of tragedy if you are looking to find it.

One of the reasons I enjoyed reading Little Bee so much was because of the bright culture that shines through every page. It is not easy to recognize everything that is going on in the world around you, and through this book I was able to find an understanding and sympathy for those who are under lesser circumstances. Little Bee reveals so much about the African culture; the book left me longing to learn more about it. Little Bee had an excellent attitude though her circumstances were shabby, which gives the story a gripping element because of her endurance.

Although Little Bee is a heavy book to read, it is worth the effort. Their reactions to their devastating circumstances is inspiring. It will give you a sympathy for Little Bee and leave you wanting to know about her African culture.
