February 28, 2009: For fans of darker childrens literature, this is a sure-fire hit. The mood is shrouded in fear but paced slowly and deliciously. The characters are pictures of from another time where manners ruled above all things. Richly described settings and foods and dot the pages. Curl up in a blanket, make a hot cup of tea and get lost in a world where you will love to hate the evil governess and want to sweep into secret passage-ways and face the rabid, starving wolves and bitter cold snow rather than give in to such tirany.

    I Also Recommend: Coraline.

December 20, 2007: I read this book for the first time in 3rd grade, and though some of the vocabulary was quite challenging, I LOVED every minute of it! Through the years, it remains my favorite childhood book - full of mystery, plot twists, and suspense! Great read for kids and adults!
