    Synopsis

Take one food writer named Cranky Agnes, add a hitman named Shane, mix them together with a Southern mob wedding, a missing necklace, two annoyed flamingos, and a dog named Rhett, and you've got a recipe for a sexy, hilarious novel about the disastrous side of true love...

Agnes Crandall's life goes awry when a dognapper invades her kitchen one night, seriously hampering her attempts to put on a wedding that she's staked her entire net worth on. Then a hero climbs through her bedroom window. His name is Shane - no last name, just Shane - and he has his own problems: He's got a big hit scheduled, a rival trying to take him out, and an ex-mobster uncle asking him to protect some little kid named Agnes. When he finds out that Agnes isn't so little, that his uncle has forgotten to mention a missing five million bucks he might have lost in Agnes's house, and that his last hit was a miss, Shane's life isn't looking so good, either. Then a bunch of lowlifes come looking for the money, a string of hitmen show up for Agnes, and some wedding guests gather with the intent to throw more than rice. Agnes and Shane have their hands full with greed, florists, treachery, flamingos, mayhem, mothers of the bride, and - most dangerous of all - each other.

    Publishers Weekly

Crusie and Mayer reteam (after Don't Look Down) on this goofball romantic confectionary that mixes together Cranky Agnes, a food writer and caterer, with Shane, a hit man with no last name. The plot is a little short on sense, but it's hard to complain when the duo keeps the ingredients coming at a fast pace. Agnes has staked everything she owns on the big Mafia wedding she's catering, and Shane has been sent to keep an eye on Agnes but winds up in love and in big trouble. Soon the two are involved in a dognapping and snooping in a basement hiding a murdered body and $5 million. Burr does a very good job as the women in the story (besides Agnes, there's also Brenda Fortunato, the widow of a top gangster who is hatching a dastardly plot to steal Agnes's treasured home). Unfortunately, Burr isn't as convincing with the male voices. Still, there's enough romance and comedy here to make it all diverting. Simultaneous release with the St. Martin's hardcover (Reviews, June 4). (Aug.)

November 11, 2009: First time that I read this author and found it to be a very entertaining book. Very easy to follow and it had a good story. I look forward to reading more of this author.

October 12, 2009: By the time I finished the first chapter of "Agnes and the Hitman," I was laughing so hard I cried; and it's not even easy to make me smile! Trust me, nothing you've read before will prepare you for the opening of Crusie and Mayer's latest collaboration.

Just when I thought I'd figured out the book's premise, "Agnes and the Hitman" hit me with another jump-off-the-cliff plot twist. (Which is an oblique reference to Crusie and Mayer's other colloboration "Don't Look Down." Another review altogether; I'll just say it was good enough for me to pick up "Agnes & the Hitman" without a second glance.) It may help to keep paper and pencil handy if you want to keep up with how-who's-related-to-whom. There are guaranteed surprises here . . .

Although it bears some resemblance to "Chick Lit" I don't think that the designation quite fits in this case. It's probably due to Mayer's ex-military influence that "Agnes and the Hitman" never falls into Chick Lit's tendency towards predictabliity. Yes, there's romance in here--but there's also some terrific, action-packed James Bond(and even a little Mario Puzo influence).

I read several dozen novels a year, and this is one I HIGHLY recommend. It was still warm from my reading when I passed it off to a friend for her enjoyment. When I get it back, it's hubby's turn so he can see what was so funny I woke him up by laughing -

My only disappointment was that there was no indication that Cranky Agnes would turn into a series!
