    Synopsis

Like our Fan's Guide to the Spiderwick Chronicles and our hugely popular Truth Behind a Series of Unfortunate Events comes the first inside guide to the bestselling Eragon series, soon to be a major motion picture starring John Malkovich and Jeremy Irons.

    VOYA

Based on Christopher Paolini's wildly popular Inheritance series, this guide takes readers deeper into the mythology, the magic, and the folklore of fantasy, managing to entertain as it slyly educates. Ever wonder whether Eragon is actually an elf? Who or what are dwarfs? Is there any scientific fact behind all that magic? Using a variety of sources from quantum physics to Tolkien to Edgar Allan Poe, Gresh dives into the text of Eragon (Knopf, 2003/VOYA August 2003) and Eldest (2005/VOYA December 2005), extracting the more interesting and complex elements to explore in detail. Commentary ranges from a serious literary exploration of fantasy characters and the framework of fairytales to an amusing commentary on Snow White and even recipes for attracting fairies. After several chapters on various magical creatures and the mysterious forces that rule in Eragon's world, Gresh offers a short primer for anyone interested in writing fantasy stories or novels. If that is not enough to inspire young authors, the final chapter focuses on Paolini and his mercurial rise to fame. Only loosely bound to the Inheritance books, this interesting and highly entertaining guide is sure to quench readers' thirst for more about Eragon and Saphira, if only temporarily. Readers only marginally acquainted with the Paolini novels will still find this book interesting as it is more about magical elements and beings found in all fantasy books and stories. It offers everything that an unauthorized guide should be.
