This intelligently crafted resource book by former University of Washington lecturer Averill and Native art educator/illustrator Morris combines effective approaches to touring, viewing, and learning about the Native arts of the Northwest Coast region. While the text is organized to function best as a guidebook for interested lay readers, there is also invaluable reference information as well. The first section, "Where To Find the Art," focuses on specific geographical locations for hand-held touring purposes. The second section provides "Sources of the Art," with terse artist biographies and descriptions of Northwest Coast tribes and their practices. The "Resources" listed in the last section directs the reader to places where they can see art in use and obtain formal training in the subject. This work fulfills the dual needs of the tourist and Native American arts enthusiast.-Paula A. Baxter, NYPL
