May 11, 2004: This latest Splash Guide covers more than 200 remote swim holes in seven eastern states from Maine to Virginia. Most choices involve a short hike to reach the natural pool, some involve more difficult scrambling or longer hikes. All of these sites have been personally visited by the author and rated for season, difficulty of approach, family and dog use. Many lie near the Appalachian Trail. Pancho features the best, most pristine plunges, but he also makes shorter comments on other choices in each area. Secluded waterfalls, remote two-person tubs and hidden pools. Clothing optional spots are noted. Icons tell dog owners if four-legged hikers are appropriate and families with small children can tell at a glance if the journey is a good one for the little dippers. The outdoors has hundreds of potential destinations, but the weekend has only 52 hours until Monday. An effective guide, in addition to telling you where to go, should tell you where not to go. Splash reviews the best ones, while listing lesser spots in the back of each chapter.
