This undergraduate text concentrates on research macroeconomics and monetary economics in a series of models which students analyze to develop their understanding of relevant theories. Romer (U. of California, Berkeley) covers topics such as the Solow growth model, infinite-horizon and overlapping-generations models, new growth theory, real business-cycle theory, consumption, investment, inflation and monetary policy and budget deficits and fiscal policy. This edition includes substantial updates and the addition of materials on Keynsian theories, nominal stickiness, and the Mankiw- Reis model of price adjustment. May 21, 2004: This is the most useless economics book I've ever used. The text is very complicated, and the examples only serve to confuse you more. Undergraduates should certainly avoid this book, and even graduates should try to find a book that's a little more accessible.

October 30, 2000: I was fortunate enough to take an undergraduate course in Macroeconomics from David Romer at Berkeley a few years ago. We used this book, in conjunction with a standard undergraduate macro text (Mankiw). Advanced Macroeconomics provided an excellent overview of long run and short run macro models. The quantitative aspects of the book, while certainly thorough, are well-tempered by qualitative analysis. Romer is not only an excellent teacher, he's also a clear and concise writer. Advanced Macroeconomics is one of the few Economics textbooks I kept from my undergraduate years. I often find myself thumbing through it when I want to review growth theories. Any student of Economics (undergraduate or graduate) should have this book in his/her collection.
