    Publishers Weekly

Part fairy godmother, part outcast, part dream-come-true, the star of Spinelli's novel shares many of the mythical qualities as the protagonist of his Maniac Magee. Spinelli poses searching questions about loyalty to one's friends and oneself and leaves readers to form their own answers, said PW in our Best Books citation. Biography

Growing up, Jerry Spinelli was really serious about baseball. He played for the Green Sox Little League team in his hometown of Norristown, Pennsylvania, and dreamed of one day playing for the major leagues, preferably as shortstop for the New York Yankees.

December 18, 2009: I first read this book seven years ago, and it remains one of my favorite books of all time.

Upon re-reading it as a mature, world-beaten person, I find gems in the book that I never noticed before. The story grows stronger with age, even though the writing is simple and sometimes overly obvious (though this isn't a problem, given the age range of the audience).

The entire book runs like a description of Stargirl, a character so offlandish and quirky that she disturbs the social order of Mica High merely with her presence. Add a slightly stalkerish but somehow-still-cute romance and you have a summary of part of the novel.

Stargirl, however, shines too much; the undeserving object of her affection and the narrator of the novel, Leo Borlock, appears almost to not have a personality. It's almost as if every other character in the novel, save maybe Archie and Senor Saguaro, are cardboard cutouts to prop up the title character.

Nevertheless, Spinelli praises nonconformity in such a poignant and natural way that readers who understand the enchantment behind Stargirl Caraway's antics will be touched and entertained.

Random note for adult readers - is it just me, or was the Ocotillo Ball part of the story a passive mirror to Stephen King's Carrie's prom scene (at least, the first parts of both)? Maybe I just don't read enough high school-setting literature.

    Good parts: Excellent moral, plot

Bad parts: Characters are unrealistic...but one can call that good too

    December 16, 2009: Stargirl Reveiw

    Allison Heitchue

"Squeak squeak!" squealed Cinnamon, Stargirl Carrways adventurous pet rat. If you love a book that's going to make you sad, happy, excited, and make you not want to stop reading, I would definitely go pick up a copy of "stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli.

Stargirl is a non fiction book about Stagirl Carraway. Stargirl's parents move around alot, so Stargirl doesn't really make much friends. She has been home schooled all her life, but when her family moves to Arizona, Stargirl gets a taste of the real world. Stargirl is different. As you now know Stargirl has a pet rat, which is different or weird to some. Stargirl wears flapper clothes and kimonos. Stargirl goes around the lunchroom and sings happy birthday to somebody having their birthday. She would play her ukulele and sing to them. Now it's not as bad as you think. Her amazing, happy personality catches Leo Borlocks eye. They end up falling in love and dating. Follow Stargirl as she shows Leo the fun, happy, and free side of life.

I would give Stargirl five stars. I would give this book five stars because it's easy to read and clear. Some books I have read are not only boring, but just difficult to follow. Stargirl is easy to understand and follow. This book has a good story line, a great meaning and good influence for all ages. This book shows you it's okay to be different. Why live a lie or put up a wall, just be your self and everything will be okay. I love the story line because I love how Stargirl shows Leo the good side of life. Also because Leo gives Stargirl a chance not caring what others thought. And him just giving her a chance gave her a friend, and helped him find his true love. There is also a sequel to Stargirl called Love Stargirl. I have read Love Stargirl and will say if you like Stargirl, you wont be able to resist reading the second book.
