    Synopsis

In a crowded courtroom in Mississippi, a jury returns a shocking verdict against a chemical company accused of dumping toxic waste into a small town’s water supply, causing the worst “cancer cluster” in history. The company appeals to the Mississippi Supreme Court, whose nine justices will one day either approve the verdict or reverse it.

Who are the nine? How will they vote? Can one be replaced before the case is ultimately decided?

The chemical company is owned by a Wall Street predator named Carl Trudeau, and Mr. Trudeau is convinced the Court is not friendly enough. With judicial elections looming, he decides to try to purchase himself a seat on the Court. The cost is a few million dollars, a drop in the bucket for a billionaire like Mr. Trudeau. Through an intricate web of conspiracy and deceit, his political operatives recruit a young, unsuspecting candidate. They finance him, manipulate him, market him, and mold him into a potential Supreme Court justice. Their Supreme Court justice.

The Appeal is a powerful, timely, and shocking story of political and legal intrigue, a story that will leave listeners unable to think about our electoral process or judicial system in quite the same way ever again.

The Washington Post - Bethanne Patrick

With The Broker and now The Appeal, John Grisham seems to be enlarging his fictional niche, focusing on hard-hitting, reality-based courtroom melodramas in which the message takes center stage…an affecting moral comes through in The Appeal. It reads like a long, engaging and sad fable.

    Biography

The master of the legal thriller, John Grisham was a criminal and civil lawyer in Mississippi when his first book, A Time to Kill, was published. But it was his next book, The Firm, that became a blockbuster and established him as king of the genre.

December 07, 2009: Once I began reading this book I could not put it down. In the beginning, (for being a younger audience member to such a detailed book) I didnt quite get the point of the story. I am not one who follows politics. But as I kept reading, Grisham continued to bring me in through the many characters and perspectives he created. He also explained in high detail about politics. As you go along the tale of one man's journey to regain wealth and power in society you will see the effect that money has on people and the justice system in our world today. You can't help but to think to ask yourself, "do things like that actually happen in our present world?" The book is very entertaining throughout the story up until the end. The end of the novel was very weak and leaves the reader hanging. However, the moral is clearly shown in this story and I would recommend The Appeal to anyone looking for a dramatic novel filled with the harsh truths in our society.
