      Booknews

Eleven essays are presented as an outgrowth of a 1998 Symposium on the Modular Representation Theory of Finite Groups held at the U. of Virginia. The essays explore the modular representations of groups of Lie type in nondefining characteristic, in p articular the relationship with -Schur algebras, James' conjecture for groups of type , and generalizations to the representations of the groups of other types. The relationship of -Schur algebras to the quantization of other algebras and connections with modular representations of symmetric groups are examined. Further material discusses Broué's conjectures on equivalences of derived categories of modules in blocks with abelian defect group in groups of Lie type, derived and Rickard equivalences, and the corresponding problems for abstract finite groups.
