      Synopsis

This book intertwines the stories of 3 immortal subjects - Bobby Jones, Augusta National, and the Masters Tournament- into 1 compelling narrative that is greater than the sum of its parts. The 3 stories are inextricably linked, and together they form a fascinating backdrop to an April drama which is unique in the annals of golf, and one that, like Jones himself, transcends sports.

Charles Price spent 3 years interweaving these stories from firsthand experience with Augusta National and the Masters Tournament that dates back to 1948. in an unprecedented move, Augusta National opened its guarded archives to him, thereby making this book the first authorized history of the club and the tournament.the golden thread of the saga, however, lies in Bobby Jones- the real Bobby Jones- with whom price shared a friendship not privileged to any other writer since O.B. Keefer, the Atlanta newspaperman who covered all 27 of the major national championships in which Jones competed and who devoted his career to playing Boswell to Jones' Dr. Johnson.

      Library Journal

This is a thoroughly researched and engrossing history of the Augusta National Golf Club and its crown jewel, the Masters Tournament. Designed by Bobby Jones in the early 1930s, the Masters achieved major status more quickly than any other tournament played. While the narrative does proceed to the age of Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, the author is primarily concerned with illuminating the romantic earlier days of American golf. This is golf history at its best and it belongs in libraries with active golf collections. Laurence Hull, Cannon Memorial Lib., Concord, N.C.
