      Eleanor Heldrich - Children's Literature

Tavi Tiger, the main character in this book, lives in a jungle in India, and this story is an introduction to some of the creatures who might live in an Indian jungle. Young readers are advised on the first page to look also for a small Gecko lizard on every page. The geckos are easy enough to find but the baby tiger, Tavi, with her blue green eyes and bright orange and black coat, is totally captivating. Each long white whisker and eyebrow, each tucked-in claw, every hair on her head grabs your attention as she awakens from her nap and searches from page to page for what is making the sound that awakened her. Moths and beetles, birds, butterflies and frogs, a snake, a mongoose and a furry grey loris come out from behind the flaps as they are opened and follow Tavi through the pages seeking the elusive maker of the sound that Tavi hears. And, of course, it was made by the geckos all the time!
