April 20, 2008: I agree with the previous reviewer on most of his points. But, I do think that much of the grammar could have been explained less 'academically', maybe having a native english teacher/speaker help edit the book would have made it much clearer. But, finding really good books on Korean are rare, and this is one such rarety. This book does challenge the learner more than other beginner's books such as Colloquial and TY. If you stick with it you will reach intermediate level Korean and be able to have decent conversations with Korean friends, read a few articles here and there, and understand Korean movies to a surprisingly high degree. The vocabulary build-up is around 1200 words. Lastly, I would say that the strength of this book is that it covers all levels of speech - from honourific to informal colloquial speech.

June 30, 2007: I used this book as a review after taking korean classes at uni. I looked at a number of other books, but what makes this book stand out is that it has an early coverage of the very important levels of speach: polite, formal,friendly, intimate etc. which is crucial to know for learners of korean at an early stage. Many other books I looked at did not cover it as extensively and to the same depth. You will also learn how to read and write korean properly, and the pronounciation guide is excellent. The book also has a very useful inclusion of historical and cultural facts about Korea which I really appreciated. The excercises cover the whole range of korean: writing, speaking, grammar, words. The design and structure of the book is well thought-out, its an excellent quality product.
