August 21, 2004: This story was so engaging. Once I began reading it, I hated to put it down. The characters were so personable and warm. Although it is a fictional book, there was non-figtious historical information included. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good book with great content.

August 08, 2004: Having no idea that black slaves willingly fought on the side of the South during the Civil War, I discovered that Tommie Thompson makes their stories come alive. The characters are believable, and you find yourself having greater and greater empathy for all those men, black and white, who fought so bravely and suffered all the catastrophes that war brings.
