The author tells her personal story of making the decision to home-school. She relates the steps of her decision and offers a number of personal examples of the practical aspects of what home-schooling entails. Interspersed throughout the book are short sections written by her children as to their perceived benefits of a home-school education. Other sections provide practical help and advice on supplies, resources, and activities that complete a home-school environment.
The title of this book is somewhat misleading. Christian lifewhich the author embraces with vigoris the real focus here. Mason's motivation, daily routine, and curriculum are immersed in worship. The author is certainly an inspiration, considering that she has eight children and is in the midst of the thirteenth year of her plan to take them all through her home program. Some of the vignettes included in this slight volume are written by parents, others by older children who have graduated. These stories often focus more upon religious fervor than education. A few suggested "theme days" and other classroom projects may inspire a teacherparent. The use of a homeschoolers' support group, visits to the public library, and involvement of grandparents or other relatives in the development of a home curriculum are obvious resources. Mason also discusses the problem of providing social outlets and adequate challenges to the older teen at home. Recommended resources listed at the end of the book again focus primarily on fundamentalist material that attacks the evolution theory and emphasizes Bible study. Some general information about the brass tacks of home schooling can be gleaned from this title, but overall it offers little to the family that is not so devout. This book would be most helpful to parents embracing this lifestyle for their family and looking for the spiritual courage to take the plunge, but this resource is not for everyone. Further Reading.
