The United States government sponsored an official survey of the Santa Fe Trail between 1825 and 1827. George Champlin Sibley was the only leader of the survey to travel the entire length of the road from the Missouri frontier to Santa Fe, New Mexico. His journals and diaries, augmented by those of two colleagues, describe the landscape, peoples, and cultures along the famous wagon road.
