Biography

Sir William Golding was born in Cornwall in 1911. He started writing at the age of seven, but following the wishes of his parents, studied natural sciences and English at Oxford. He served in World War II and following the war, returned to writing and teaching. By the time Lord of the Flies was finally accepted for publication in 1954, it had been turned down by more than twenty publishers. The book became an immediate bestseller. In 1983, Golding was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, largely based on this book. He was knighted in 1988 and died in 1993.

February 07, 2010: When my English teacher told us we had to read this book, I groaned. I already attempted to read it, and didn't like it. Nonetheless, I read it again.

This book centers on a group of British school boys who crash on a deserted island. They attempt to establish leadership but end up bringing out raw human nature.

I liked it better this time. Perhaps I matured as a reader from the last time I read it, or was just in a better mood. One thing I still dislike about it though is the prose. I often had trouble figuring out who was speaking and just often had a hard time following it. I did, however, pick up on all the symbolism and yada yada yada....

Anyway, I recommend this book. Everyone should try to read this once (or twice, in some circumstances) because its one of the books that you can always allude to when you want to look smart.

I Also Recommend: Brave New World, Of Mice and Men, Fahrenheit 451, 1984, Animal Farm.

February 07, 2010: My brother was reading this book in school and I took a look at it and it was fantastic, so I bought it! Golding's use of imagery to lay out his ideas of human nature is amazing. I suggest reading or learning about Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan prior to reading.
