Each letter of the alphabet is represented by an animal, from the anteater and bear to the yak and zebra.
PreS-Gr 1-- Many illustrators feel compelled to produce, with varying degrees of success, an alphabet book; Argent, whose work here resembles her One Woolly Wombat (Kane / Miller, 1985), has created an attractive and useful, but ultimately unoriginal contribution to the genre of illustrated ABCs. Accompanied by the Willie Wagtail, one of Australia's most widespread and well-loved birds, one species of animal per letter parades across the pages. Although each is engaged in an activity, such as eating or grooming, and all end up at the zoo, there is neither story nor plot to tie this together. The large, lively chalk and pencil drawings are pleasing, and the choice of animals sufficiently global to give this wide appeal. Where alphabet books are in demand, this breaks no new ground but will fill the bill. --Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, CT
