      School Library Journal

Gr 3-8-Each volume is a potpourri of facts about apparel around the world with some emphasis on Australian styles, designers, and people. Each volume offers historical perspectives, and challenges about the types of clothing being discussed. In the first book, Whitty covers armor, aprons, swimwear, fire-fighting suits, and space suits. The second title explains the origins of underwear as a means to prevent body odor from reaching the expensive outerwear at a time when people did not bathe frequently. Various illustrations of elaborate sets of historical undergarments and nightwear are included. The third book discusses such diverse topics as uniforms, wedding wear, medals, heraldry, and cell phones. The books are illustrated with color photographs. While these titles are quite interesting to look at, the approach is so eclectic that information is difficult to locate, making them better for browsing than for research.-Elizabeth Stumpf, Clearfield Middle School, PA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
