    Biography

The winner of the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature, Ernest Hemingway is one of the true giants of modern American literature. Hemingway's punchy, pared-down style and ability to zero in on the perfect characterizing detail of a person or scene has influenced every serious novelist of the second half of the 20th century. Everyone reads him at one time or another.

January 26, 2010: In The Old Man and the Sea written by Ernest Hemingway, Santiago is an old wary, weathered fisherman that is down on his luck. Old Santiago and his young companion, Manolin has gone 86 days without catching even the smallest guppy. Manolin, Santiago's young fishing companion is a special character because he is the only one in Havana who truly believes in what Santiago is doing, and the hopefulness gleaming from Manolin is enough to keep old Santiago fishing for another day. Determined to find the biggest catch of his life, Santiago goes out on the sea alone -- soon enough the epic battle between Santiago and a marlin erupts. Problems soon arise however, when Santiago gets a line and is dragged out miles from where he wants to be. Using his age, his wisdom and the respect for the sea and its creatures, Santiago battles with the marlin for what seems like years. Soon, his limbs begin to tire, his joints begin to cripple and with every last bit of strength, Santiago lands the great marlin. What Santiago learns after his battle is more than catching a fish could ever teach him. Santiago learns about self-pride, respect and how to endure even the worst of storms. I can relate to the young boy Manolin in the story because I once had an older grandfather figure that took me out on different adventures, and at a young age, its enjoyable and important to learn about life from such a wise, older person. The Old Man and the Sea is not a fishing story, but a story about the human spirit, the determination of a person, and the great pride that people take in themselves, even if they come up short. What readers should take away from this story is that it is not about what one comes back with, but what lesson was learned along the way. I liked the book. I recommend this book because it's a story of perseverance, dedication, and a lesson in never giving up. These are lessons that every high school and college student should learn.
