    Synopsis

One reckless man . . . One passionate woman.

Enter the world of Mary Balogh—the glittering ballrooms and vast country estates of Regency-era England, where romance, with all its mystery, magic, and surprises, comes vibrantly alive.

It was a perfect morning in May . . .

Neville Wyatt, Earl of Kilbourne, awaited his bride at the altar—when a ragged beggar woman raced down the aisle instead. The cream of the ton saw him stare, shocked, then declare that this was his wife! One night of passion was all he remembered as he beheld Lily, the woman he'd wed, loved, and lost on the battlefield in Portugal. Now he said he'd honor his commitment to her—regardless of the gulf that lay between them.

Then Lily spoke her mind . . .

She said she wanted only to start a new life—wanted only a husband who truly loved her. She had to leave him to learn how to meet his world on her terms. So Lily agreed to earn her keep as his aunt's companion and study the genteel arts. Soon she was the toast of the ton, every inch a countess fit for the earl, who vowed to prove to his remarkable wife that what he felt for her was far more than desire, that what he wanted from her was much more than . . . One Night for Love.

May 16, 2009: I read this novel in one sitting. It is a easy read and full of love and promise.

Lily is the main character along with Neville, the Earl of Kilbourne. They had met and fallen in love in another lifetime of war and fear. He was of the ton and she was merely a soldier's daughter.

Her soldier father dies on the battleground and Neville, his superior officer, promises to care for his daughter Lily. He immediately marries her and protects her from being captured by the French. The French will treat her with care and will not harm her as long as they know she is married to an English officer and a gentleman.

Lily is shot and left to be dead. Neville also receives a small graze on his forehead that leaves him unconscious. He returns to his life back in England and prepares to marry Lauren, a childhood friend.

Suddenly, Lily appears at his wedding. Neville is stunned to see her and surprises his bride to be and his guests by telling them she is his wife.

He had thought her to be dead and now she is before him dressed in beggars clothes.

Lily tries to be the Countess she has become. She can not read or write. She has no talents. She does not know how to be an upper class lady. She only wants to be free and carefree.

Lily learns to become a lady by a tutoring Elizabeth. She still is madly in love with Neville but leaves him because she has no self worth to be a Countess.

She finds someone is trying to kill her and she does not know the reason.

Neville tries to court her once again to make him his bride.

The trials she must go through is worthwhile reading. Their love is as deep as can be and her past is resolved slowly but surely.

I enjoyed the book and look forward to more of Mary Balogh's stories.
