Discusses the life and works of well-known author S.E. Hinton.
Gr 9-12-- Another fine addition to Twayne's young adult author series. All of the mysteries about S. E. Hinton are cleared up in the opening biographical chapter, in which readers learn what the well-known initials stand for and that her first novel, The Outsiders , was published when she was 19 years old. The book follows the usual series' format with chapters discussing each of Hinton's novels. The book is basically the same as the 1987 edition, with a new chapter on Hinton's recent Taming the Star Runner (Delacorte, 1988) . In general, each chapter covers such items of interest as the plot, critical reaction to the books, themes, and characterization. An appendix gives information about the film adaptations of four of her books. The bibliography includes citations to reviews of Hinton's novels, a feature that will be helpful to students. Changes in Hinton's approach to writing over the years are emphasized, and comparisons of her different books are frequently made. An excellent addition to young adult collections that do not own the first edition. --Dorothy L. Lilly, Grosse Pointe North High School, MI
