Biography

Most readers know Joseph Conrad for creating Marlow's harrowing journey through the African Congo in Heart of Darkness. Conrad was adept at capturing the physical and cultural experiences he gleaned from 15 years at sea, but he also wrote political thrillers, essays, and plays based on his own short stories. His best works tend to be brief, but pack in a remarkable perspicacity about humanity's deepest faults.

Very complex but yet comprehendibleby mo12

February 09, 2010: The book The Heart of Darkness is a very egregious book. It contains a story that is very complex, with a character that has an extreme amount of cupidity on his mind. When I first started to read this book in my English 10 class I absolutely hated it. I couldn't stand hearing the title The Heart of Darkness. But soon after contently reading through it with my classmates and my teacher I gradually started to enjoy this book.

I believe that the book The Heart of Darkness really did make an impact on me. It really showed me how insanity and greed can really take over the mind of one person. Also it conveyed how one person can try to force others to believe or think of the same ideas. I think that I will remember the Heart of Darkness because it is very difficult and it has stimulated my mind into thinking differently. Also the book will stick with me because it tells a story within a story and it really makes you think about what you're reading. And books like that will always stay in the back of your head and keep you thinking about other possible outcomes. If you really want to understand the message that Joseph Conrad is trying to explain then I prefer you read the book first. If you read the book first then you will already have a good understanding of the story. If you watch the movie first then you will be guessing and predicting about what actually happened. The book really gets into depth and detail about what is happening on each and every page. I would recommend this book to anyone especially if you want to further yourself and feel a great deal of accomplishment. But this book is not for novice readers you need to be able to break down sentences and understand morphemes to fully get the story of this book.

I Also Recommend: First Family.

THE Challengeby skirby17

February 09, 2010: The book Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is a challenging yet intriguing book. I practically dreaded coming to English class every other day because I didn't understand anything going on in the book. There were one or two students in the class that understood it and would do some explaining, but my teacher did most of the explaining of the symbolism. This book is pretty much all reading between the lines and thinking outside the box. I didn't enjoy the complexity of this book at all, but I do feel a little smarter now that my class and I have conquered Heart of Darkness. Even though the book was only 76 pages long, it took almost 4 months to read it. I would only suggest this book if you're looking for a complex book and you are looking for to do a boatload of analyzing. But I also suggest it to you because it really shows the shades of grey, where in most books it's mainly black and white. If you chose to take on the Heart of Darkness challenge, all I have to say is: Good Luck!
