It is time to enjoy another lyrical, gentle story about Bear and the other furry and feathered creatures inhabiting his world. Once again the illustrations, done in acrylic paint, are inviting. The grass is lush, the animals appealing, and Bear is a calmly expressive presence. One summery day, Bear goes out to play and he hears a noise in the tree. Bear asks, "Who?" It is not Mouse, so Bear asks, "Who?" once more. It is not Hare, so Bear again asks, "Who?" Then something goes by so quickly Bear cannot see who it is. Bear continues to question as, one by one, his friends gather round; they all peer into a hole where something is hiding. When Bear is finally answered with a "Who?" he says, "Hi," and talks the shy newcomer into coming along to play. PreS-Gr 2-A mystery character is introduced in this fourth book about Bear and his friends. One summer morning, the cub heads out to play. He hears someone in the tree and thinks it might be his friend Mouse. But Mouse arrives and eliminates that possibility. So begins the guessing game that makes up the rhyming text as, page by page, the various woodland animals come on the scene narrowing the choices of the creature's identity. The refrain "And the Bear asks, `Who?'" gives readers a heavy-handed clue, but not until the end does this shy newcomer make his appearance. Chapman's acrylic illustrations are as soft and cuddly as ever and the familiar rhythm works well for reading aloud.
