The national bestselling Noble Dead saga is "one of those [series] for which the term dark fantasy was definitely intended" (Chronicle).
After her adventures with Magiere and Leesil, Wynn Hygeorht has returned to the Guild of Sagecraft, bearing texts supposedly penned by vampires from the time of the Forgotten History and the Great War. Seized by the Guild's scholars and sent out for copying without Wynn's consent, several pages disappearand the two sages charged with conveying these pages are murdered. Suspicious of the Guild, separated from the only friends she fully trusts, and convinced the Noble Dead are responsible for the killings, Wynn embarks on a quest to uncover the secrets of the texts.

June 13, 2009: These books have always been my favorites. Wynn is a great character and this book was a great addition to an already addictive series. I do miss the dialog between Margiere, Leesil, Chap and her. The New Fay was a great way to keep chap involved and show his love for the sage. These characters are greatly written and continue to evolve. This book starts off where Child of A Dead God left off. Wynn has returned to the guild with all of the books she recovered from the castle in the mountains. What is revealed in the text upsets the order and some force unlike any undead Wynn has seen before is attacking the sages. Chane has followed Wynn, despite his promise, and ends up helping Wynn defeat the force. This book was great and the next one Though Sea and Stone will be great as well.
I Also Recommend: Shadow's Edge (Night Angel Series #2), Beyond the Shadows (Night Angel Series #3), The Way of Shadows (Night Angel Series #1), Dhampir, Dhampir.

May 14, 2009: This Noble Dead installment was largely a disappointment. It didn't feature the main characters of the series, (Magiere, Leesil and Chap), and had no direct connection to their prophesied involvement in the future undead war. Instead, the story is a (slow but well-developed) coming of age/independence tale and a (periodically compelling but unresolved) murder mystery which unfolds around the the scholar Wynn Hyggeroth and ancient scrolls of the undead she brought back to the Guild of Sagecraft. Other than Wynn, the primary characters include Chane, Shade (one of Chap's canine offspring), an erstwhile city guard captain, an interesting mage master and a mysterious scriptorium owner. The coming of age/independence component is more complete than the murder mystery. Although the cause of the killings is more-or-less determined, the dark cowled, ghost-like, presumably undead perpetrator remains a mystery. (I honestly don't know if this novel is a second and separate Noble Dead series, or whether it somehow ties in with an ongoing story of Magiere, Leesil and Chap.) Further, the importance of Wynn's discoveries within the scrolls (hinting at the last known refuge of a vaguely defined ancient enemy) and the viability of Wynn's course of action based upon that knowledge are left unresolved.
