      Synopsis

Twenty years after her mother's disappearance, Jo Ellen gets photographs in the mail. They are photographs of her mother: some candid, some close-up, and some of her naked, beautiful, and dead.

Jo Ellen hasn't been back in years. She thought that she had left that house a long time ago. Left the darkness that came over the island off the coast of Georgia and her family's lives when her mother, Annabelle, disappeared. But that island, Sanctuary, is a part of her. It haunts her dreams, and Jo realizes that it is time to go home, back to the island inn run by her family. Upon her return, Jo finds tragedy and loss still heavy and looming, and she is enmeshed once again in the troubled relationships she has struggled so long and hard to forget. With the help of one man, she learns the truth about who is stalking her and about the sordid past. But the threat that drove Jo back to the island in the first place has followed her there. And Sanctuary proves to be a more dangerous place than anyone had ever thought.

Nora Roberts's latest novel, Sanctuary is a story of dangerous liaisons and family betrayals. Roberts's characters are right there, real and honest. These characters are the plot. They bring you into a different world for a time and keep you there with their story, their words.

      Publishers Weekly

On the heel of the breakout hardcover success of bestseller Montana Sky, Roberts plows through a predictable saga of passion, betrayal and murder involving an estranged Southern family haunted by tragedy. Recovering from a nervous breakdown brought on by a malevolent stalker, photographer Jo Ellen Hathaway returns to Sanctuary, her childhood home located on a small resort island off the coast of Georgia. But the lush island offers little solace, for there Jo must face the troubled family relationships and painful memories caused by her mother's mysterious disappearance 20 years earlier. Soon, however, Jo finds unexpected joy in the love of a man who leads her to the truth about her mother's life and death and about the crazed stalker who wants Jo dead. Roberts has a talent for vivid description: the sounds and smells of this verdant island waft from the page; her characters' sexual encounters mirror the island's fecundity and shimmer with Southern heat. But she dilutes the story with a silly murder mystery that distracts from the intriguing elements of Jo's confrontation with her past, her discovery of true love and her reconciliation with her family. The denouement arrives with a yawn, despite the arrival of a clichd hurricane, which is just one example of how Roberts succumbs to the temptation to throw everything into the pot. 250,000 first printing; $250,000 ad/promo; Literary Guild main selection. (Mar.) FYI: Roberts was the first writer to be inducted into the Romance Writers of America's Hall of Fame.

October 22, 2009: This is a fantastic book from a fantastic author. Nora Roberts is by far one of the best writers we have today. I have almost read every book she has written. There are a few I have yet to read, but I'm getting there. Sanctuary, in my opinion, is an edge of your seat read. From page one the story grabs you. I read this book in two days. I only put it down when I had to, otherwise I could be found with the book in my hand. If you have never read a Nora Roberts book then you are missing out on a great way to spend an morning, afternoon or evening.

June 13, 2009: The story was a bit too sweet/romantic and needed just a bit more punch on the mystery side. Sandra Burr's reading was acceptable, but could have used a little more character distinction. Susan Erikson might have been able to bring this B rated story to life. I do not regret the purchase. I really do like Nora Roberts stories.....and love JD Robb stories!!
