      Synopsis

In 1995, J. D. Robb (a.k.a. Nora Roberts) changed the face of mystery fiction with Naked in Death and Glory in Death, the first two installments of a resilient suspense series starring Lieutenant Eve Dallas. This omnibus, 540-page paperback volume collects those two futuristic classics, making for an ideal J. D. Robb sampler.

      Biography

One of the most prolific and popular writers in the world, Nora Roberts (who also writes as her edgier alter-ego J. D. Robb) publishes multiple books a year. Not that it’s enough for her fans, who tear through her unconventional romances. With her trademark mix of fantasy, mystery, and romance, Roberts has created her own genre -- and romance fans are grateful for it!

April 01, 2009: I bought the first two books of this series when they came out in 1995 and loved the books. Since then I have read all of the books in the series-- at least twice. I guess you could say I am a fan, and this time I bought the first two books (appearing now under one cover)for my daughter.

The plots are multilayer and multifaceted, always fitting the title, even if the word death is in each of the some 25 or more books in the series.

The books are very personal and deeply felt. The main character Eve Dallas is a study of contradictions: tough, tender; brave, shy; compassionate, insensitive; complicated, straightforward. She is loyal and dedicated and perhaps, a personal hero. Experiencing her struggles makes me want to be a better person.

The secondary characters, introduced in the on-going series are a joy. And then there is Roarke, the man who becomes the love of the life of the tough, fragile Eve Dallas.

With his every touch and gesture of love, Roarke seems to tame and/or fill the emptiness of the young Eve, and by healing her, he saves himself. Some scenes are very intimate and sexual, but they fit, a part of Eve's learning to trust, to give, to accept intimacy and love and ultimately redemption.

Finally, the in death books make me laugh and usually very loudly. I sometimes reread a page just for the sarcasm, wit and repartee of the characters, especially the the interaction between Roarke and Eve and Eve and her soon to be partner Peabody.

I recommend the first two books and all of the books in the series, ending with Robb's latest book Promises in Death, a book which is extraordinary and makes me eager for the next book.
