    The first romance Susan Wiggs ever read was Shanna by the incomparable Kathleen Woodiwiss, which she devoured while slumped behind a college vector analysis textbook. Armed with degrees from Texas and Harvard, and toting a crate of "keeper" books by Woodiwiss, Roberta Gellis, Laurie McBain, Rosemary Rodgers, Jennifer Blake, Bertrice Small, and anything with the words "flaming" and "ecstasy" in the title, she became a math teacher, just to prove to the world that she did have a left brain.

    July 25, 2009: Wiggs expertly pulled me into the dark drama and tensions of the many plottings and drew me as well into the lives of the compelling main characters. A series of grizzly murders set in a Venice swirling in its mysterious fog are to be solved by the equally dark lord of the night, Sandro Cavalli, the head of the secret police. Nothing has ever distracted him from his duty until the mesmerizing effect on him of a young, immensely talented artist apprenticing with Titian, Laura Bandello. An orphan raised in a convent, Laura lives to paint and to be admitted into the all-male Academia, an unheard of ambition. She is even willing to become a courtesan - indeed she has offered her favors as a prize - all so she will be able to paint the number of canvases required by the Academia and purchase the costly art materials. Will Sandro buy her favors and save her from the brothel? Since he's met her there's been one close call after another on her life, on his, and other killings, not to mention an accumulation of prime suspects.
