    Synopsis

Alexei Korakov believes in fairy tales. He is living one. All his life his grandmother has told him about the curse visited upon his ancestor who spurned a witch and brought her wrath down upon his head. The witch cursed each Korakov male to meet his one true love over and over again until eternity, and each time to kill her. From childhood, Alexei's grandmother instilled in him one edict--never let anyone too close or the curse will take hold. Drusilla Jordan has always loved fairy tales. That's not to say she believes in "happily ever after," or that she wants the hectic life of a fantasy princess. No, Dru loves fairy tales precisely because they're not true. As the only child of an alcoholic mother, she understood all about wicked stepmothers. She never knew who would be at home after school--her sweet, gentle mother or the wicked drunken stepmother who would pass out on the couch, leaving little Drusilla alone in the dark, with only her fantasies for company. When the evil entity that cursed the Korakovs returns to battle Alexei and Dru, the two fragile humans are no match for Mavra's strength and hatred. Can Alexei trust Dru enough to bare the secret he hides in his deepest soul? And is Dru's love strong enough to triumph over her fear? Or will Mavra once again win the battle and make Alexei kill Dru...

July 26, 2006: Centuries ago, Dimitri Korakov was cursed by the evil witch whose attentions he spurned, Mavra, to live many lives and to kill his true love in each of them. And so, through the ages, that has been the repeated cycle. Once more, the spirit of the champion lives in Alexei Korakov, but this time, he has isolated himself from love or passion, except for the joy he takes in sculpting. All that changes when Dru Jordan inherits the farm next to his and the sight of her awakens feelings in him that are dangerous to them both. Their unknowing reunion has also awakened Mavra's dark soul, and once again, she is determined to destroy the lovers. However, this time, Dru knows how to defeat her forever. *** Although there is entirely too much sensuality, despite the lack of actual intercourse, this is an intriguing story, worth reading around the more graphic scenes. Yet, considering the nature of the curse, such episodes do have merit to furthering the plot, on the plus side. In the more classical definition of a fairy tale, this has all the elements, a tortured, brooding, grim hero, an ancient curse, a witch, and a heroine armed with true love. It's just not a story for children. ***

July 19, 2006: A long time ago Mavra the witch wanted Dimitri Korakov but he had resisted her attempts to seduce him because he loved his wife Irina. It angered her soshe caused him to be reborn time after time only to kill his true love starting with his wife.-------------------------- In the present Alexei Korakov was brought up by his grandmother to hate himself and to let his time run out alone to end the family curse that turns him into a panther when he feels any strong emotion. He moves to an isolated area in Mississippi only to find he has a neighbor Drusilla Jordan who knows Alexei even though she never met him before. Maura has also awakened, determined to kill both of them this time around. Alexei wants Dru to leave the area before he hurts her but she, having felt the evil of Mavra, is determined to help him fight her though he believes he will end up killing her.---------------- Rickey R. Mallory has written a beautiful rendition of Beauty and the Beast that is so sensually erotic readers will feel the heat the two lovers generate. Both the hero and the heroine are strong-willed stubborn people, the kind one wants to have in your corner when danger threatens. SHADOW OF THE CAT is a charming adult fairy tale, a spell binding romantic fantasy readers will enjoy immensely.------------------ Harriet Klausner
