Riverwatch by Joe Nassise is one of the best horror novels I have read in years. It is hard to believe that this is Nassise's first book. I know he will be around for many years to come. I eagerly await the sequel.

The moon was hanging in the sky, a baleful eye in the darkness. Its cold blue light touched the edges of the gravestones around her, sending their long, solemn shadows across the dew-wet grass in perfect rank and file, reminding her of an army standing watchful and still.

A grim, motionless army.

The air was heavy with their silence.

Silence comes in many forms, and no two are quite the same. The silence of an empty playground, where, if you listen hard you might hear the echoes of children's laughter reaching to you across the gulf of time, is different from the comforting silence you feel while sitting in an empty church. The silence of an abandoned building, crumbling and decrepit, is different from the silence of the courtroom when it is left empty after all the words have been spoken, all the motions argued, and all the objections made.

This silence was different from any other.

It was the silence of death.

Not just the lack of sound, but the very absence of it, a haunting, brooding silence with a very special weight all its own.
