    Synopsis

Lee and Miller mix a compelling fictional society governed by a strict code of honor with romantic, funny, touchingly real characters and great storytelling in "Pilots Choice". Its two tales are prequels to "Partners in Necessity", the long-awaited reprinting of their first three novels, Conflict of Honors, Agent of Change, and Carpe Diem. You need not have read their other books before diving into this one. But be warned: you may read straight through until you've finished the sequel to Partners, "Plan B".

In Local Custom, Er Thom yos'Galen is at odds with his duty: to match with a proper Liaden bride and provide clan Korval with an heir. His mother observes, "You have consistently refused every contract-alliance the head of your line has brought to your attention for the past three years. Permit me to wonder why."

Er Thom can't forget Terran scholar Anne Davis, though they agreed to part. Revisiting her one last time he finds Shan yos'Galen, his son. Shan needs Liaden training and Korval needs his skills. Anne loves Er Thom and knows he risks his melant'i (honor, reputation) if he takes a Terran wife. But she won't be parted from her son.

Er Thom and Anne are aided by Er Thom's cousin and foster brother, the Delm (head) of Korval, Daav yos'Phelium. Scout's Progress finds Daav facing contract-marriage himself. Then he meets Aelliana Caylon, a gifted mathematician who needs a pilot's license. Daav becomes her copilot and instructor. Aelliana begins to plan a future far from Liad and her sadistic older brother, Ran Eld, heir to the Delm of her clan. She doesn't know that her friend Daav can't leave with her, and is promised to another woman.

August 18, 2001: This isn't just a book, it's an experience! With two books in one, this is double the fun, as anyone will agree once they read Pilot's Choice. In Local Custom, the plot picks you up and carries you until you are catapulted into tense conclusion of a dazzling example of literary artistry. Sympathise with Er Thom as he struggles with his duties to his clan and the contract marriage arranged for him and his obligation to the son he didn't know he had and the child's mother, the woman he loves but cannot marry. Feel for Anne as she tries to decide what is best for herself and her son. Laugh at Shan's adorable toddler tricks and hold your breath during the conclusion of Local Custom. In Scout's Progress, cheer for Aelliana as she strives to escape from under her brother's tyrannical thumb and gain her independence. Grin as Daav, Er Thom's older brother, manages to scandalize half of his straitlaced family as he tries to find his own kind of freedom. Altogether, Pilot's Choice is an enthralling tapestry of words which is a must read for anyone and everyone no matter what genre they read. Don't miss it!

April 25, 2001: In Pilot?s Choice, we are treated to not just one, but two enchanting adventures set in the Liaden Universe. Newcomers to Liad needn?t worry about coming into a series already in progress. Both stories take place in a time set prior to the events in Partners in Necessity and Plan B, and both are equally capable of standing completely on their own. Of course, once you?ve delved into the deft world building of Lee and Miller, you won?t want the stories to end! Long time fans will be delighted by this return visit, which is rich with back-story and subtext. Many questions and subtle hints which peppered the previous four books are answered in this omnibus. Plus, you just won?t believe how adorable ?toddling? Shan is. This is a must-read for any connoisseur of well-crafted stories, richly layered world building, and solid, spot-on characterization. Don?t let the genre label fool you, Lee and Miller craft books that simply refuse to be pigeonholed. They?re not just SF, or fantasy, or romance ? they?re just good, old fashioned storytelling. You won?t be able to put them down.
