It was about three o'clock in the morning when something suddenly awakened Chloe. She could not quite remember what it was that had startled her, but she got up and went into the bathroom. As she got to the doorway she heard a noise that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. She was frozen in the moment and could not move her feet to take another step. Her closet door was straight ahead and was ajar about a foot and the noise was coming from inside the closet. She stopped breathing so she would be sure not to mistake what she thought she was hearing. She gently took another step and then another and suddenly realized exactly what it was. There was no doubt that someone was in her closet rocking in Betty's chair! It frightened her but she wanted to see if it was Betty, so she slowly opened the door and walked in. She hesitantly turned the light on. In her disbelief, the rocking had stopped and no one was in the chair. She backed out of the closet and ran back to the bedroom. She jumped in the bed with Grant and quietly shook him to wake him up.
"What is it, Chloe? Do you know what time it is?" he moaned in desperation of sleep. She told him the whole story and he looked at her and said she was not getting enough rest. "Please try to get some sleep, honey. You're just overtired."
"Are you saying you don't believe me? You think I'm crazy! Grant, I know what I heard. I even stopped to make sure I was not hearing something else. I have never heard "things" in my entire life. I'm telling you that rocking chair was rocking in my closet and no one was in there. I opened the door and it stopped when it heard me."
By then Grant had turned over and was wide awake. He lookedat Chloe and saw something in her eyes that he had never seen. It was a combination of fear, excitement, and desperation for someone to believe her.
