The Cold War is over, the U.S.S.R. is no more, the Berlin Wall is gone, but the Agency didn't close its doors, its agents simply went on to other things and new adversaries emerged along with a new world order. Newspapers talk of a world financial crisis, turbulent markets, governments failing, people losing everything. But no one is really paying attention to what's actually happening.
The real reason for the chaos of the markets is something former Agent Scott Evers knows more about than he should and getting too close to the truth cost the lives of his operations team. Now he's gone rogue to save his wife and unborn child. He's looking for a way out but doesn't have many options. He can become a ghost, leaving his life and those he cares about behind. He can try to unravel the mystery, try to find those responsible, but that may put those he cares about in harms way.
His only advantage is that he went on the run before they could get him but his luck's about to change. He sees them waiting for him, wondering which will take him first, knowing that in the end it may not matter because the result will be the same: gunshots. Two bodies, his and one of theirs. He wonders if there is some other way out, but he doesn't see any alternatives. Sovereign rule is absolute. If you know too much, you must pay and the price is your life.
If they kill Scott, there's no one left between them and us. America's future and the world's will be in their hands.

May 29, 2003: I just finished the book today, and it wouldn't have taken me as long as it did if I just had time to sit and read. Robert Stanek knows the secret to contructing a real page turner, and I hold him responsible for a lack of sleep, and a number of questions I hope are answered in the sequel -- there has to be a sequel. It is a masterpiece of suspense and conspiracy theory. I loved it, and will no doubt read it again.
