(Paperback)
To heal the lands and restore the light, the great kings decreed that magic and all that is magical, be it creature, man or device, shall be cleansed to dust. The cleansing raged for so long that no human could recall a time without it and it is in this time that the Dark Lord Sathar returned from the dark beyond. The one hope of the peoples of Ruin Mist was Queen Mother, the elf queen of old. She saw a way out of everlasting darkness, a path that required the union of the divided peoples.

July 05, 2008: Stanek's storytelling is very much in the style of other great fantasy writer's such as Tolkien and Eddings, and includes other classic elements such as personal quests of coming to age, and uses this to deepen an amazing plot and great narration to create this first book in his Ruin Mist series. The story follows three main characters, Vilmos, a young magician, Adrina, a princess, and Seth, a warrior Elf. Vilmos is just an ordinary boy until one day he discovers he can use magic a forbidden power punished by death. When he discovers this, he escapes with Xith, his mentor who teaches him to control and use his abilities. Adrina is a princess who makes a wish for something exciting to happen in her life, and soon gets it granted as she is thrust into dangerous events beyond her imagination. Lastly, Seth is a warrior elf on a desperate journey to reach the humans for their help before his people are doomed to die. All in all, the first book of the Ruin Mist series is a great read, full of action, adventure, and friendship, that all readers, young and old will enjoy.
