    Synopsis

Susanna LeGrande lost her fiance, her brother and her beloved home to the Union Army. But her grief only strengthened her resolve to spy for the Confederacy. The once-pampered Southern belle charmed her way through Washington society, falling brazenly into the arms of Rear Admiral Mitchell B. Longley, a commanding Union sailor. She seduced, used...and loved the powerful man.

In the heat of ecstasy, Susanna forgot Mitch was her enemy--she surrendered her body and her heart. But her ruthless betrayal in the name of the South would cost Mitch everything--his command, his men and very nearly his life. She left a shattered, soulless man in her wake.

And now Susanna's dearest love, her dearest enemy, will show her that the sweet kiss of vengeance is a game he, too, can play....

    Biography

Nan Ryan is the middle daughter of a Texas rancher and postmaster. She began her writing career in 1981. She flirted with writing mysteries, but never finished any. Then, as fate would have it, she saw an article in Newsweek magazine entitled "From Bedroom to Boardroom." It was an interesting story on the women who were writing romance novels. Nan was intrigued.

She had never read a romance. She bought a couple, read them, and knew she’d found her calling. She sat down at the Smith Corona typewriter and began her own romance. The first one never left her house. It is buried deep in a trunk and Nan says it will never be shown to anyone. Her second book sold and she’s been writing since.

Twenty-two romance novels later, she still enjoys writing and realizes she’s been blessed to have found what she loves to do. Fortunately, writing is something that can be done anywhere--and Nan should know. She’s been married for many years to Joe Ryan, a television executive. His occupation has taken them from border to border and coast to coast.

The Ryans have lived in Washington, California, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Missouri, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and their own home state of Texas. Nan says it was fun to move around the country and honestly believes that it has helped her writing. The library and the Internet offer a great deal of information on any given place, but there is nothing quite like actually living in a locale where a book is set.

The winner of numerous awards, Nan says one of the nicest things ever written about her was printed in the St. Petersburg Times. Correspondent Ann V. Hull wrote: "Romance novelist NanRyan could step right into the pages of one of her paperbacks. Tall and slender, with smokey eyes and pearly skin, Nan Ryan looks like movie star Jessica Lange’s older sister. Ryan writes the most imaginative and bold love scenes, some of which would surely shock her former teachers at Abilene Christian University."

In June 2000, MIRA will release Nan’s 22nd book, a romantic, erotic love story entitled, The Countess Misbehaves. When Nan talks about the book, she winks and assures us that the Countess does indeed misbehave, but who can blame her? The hero is such a handsome charmer, a woman would have to be made of stone not to... misbehave with him!

November 30, 2006: This is my first Nan Ryan novel and was quite disappointed. To the author's credit, the story has a lot of potential. However, it is poorly written and the characters come out flat and one-dimensional. There are pages describing how great and witty and funny Suzanna LeGrande is, though there aren't enough scenes to prove this. The story is so fast-faced, it's almost comical. The hero Mitchell Longley comes out as being almost naive and quite boring. The idea behind the story is a good one. However, Nan Ryan requires a little more polish to make the novel effective for the reader, and the characters need more depth. Overall, 'Dearest Enemy' is a book that should be borrowed from the library (if you're curious) but is not for your personal collection.

October 11, 2006: In 1859, eighteen years old Suzanna LeGrande is happy living in Virginia with her widow mom and an older brother, Matthew, a West Point graduate. Her brother introduces her to a friend from his cadet days, Ty Bellinggrath. It is love at first sight as they begin seeing one another. One year later he proposes and she accepts. By April 1861, Virginia secedes from the Union and joins the Confederate States her brother and her fianc? join Lee. That summer as the Confederacy gains a great victory at nearby Manassas, the two men in her life die in battle. Suzanna vows vengeance on the damn Yankees.---------------------- Over the next few years Suzanna pretends to be a social butterfly, but is obtaining valuable information for the South as she spies on her Northern guests. In 1864 Union Naval Rear Admiral Mitchell Longley falls in love with Suzanna, but stupidly leaves classified material lying around that she obtains. Suzanna loves Mitch, but her vow means more. She steals the information, which leads to many deaths. Mitch is shattered as he knows who betrayed him. He lives for one thing to destroy the Southern Belle who killed their love.-------------------- Nan Ryan writes a terrific star-crossed Civil War romance that grips readers once Suzanna vows to see Yankee blood flow and never slows down until Mitch pledges to avenge the flow of Yankee blood caused by the betrayal. The lead characters are fully developed especially when anger takes over reasoning as each drives the exhilarating story line with the personal conflicts over loving a DEAREST ENEMY. This is a one sitter historical to learn how it plays out.---------------- Harriet Klausner
