    Synopsis

    Only true love could redeem....

Victoria Waverly, noble daughter of the war-ruined South, is sold in marriage to a ruthless rancher. Honor and pride help her endure life as a wife in name only but nothing can quench her forbidden desire for hired gunman Jake Roper. His gaze is hard, but tenderness he can't hide promises to unveil to Victoria the mysteries of love.

    Only true love can destroy....

Jake curses his burning need for Victoria, for he wants nothing to stand in the way of his drive to reclaim Sarratt's Kingdom - the ranch that is his legacy and obsession. But ancient wrongs and blazing passions will bind together the aristocratic beauty and the powerful cowboy. In a bloody land war, they will fight for Jake's birthright...and seize at all costs the love that is their destiny.

    Annotation

But ancient wrongs and blazing passions would bind together the proud, aristocratic beauty and the lean, powerful cowboy. In a bloody Western land war they would fight for Jake's rich birthright...and seize at last the love that was their hope, their dream, their destiny!

    Publishers Weekly

As long as Howard's ( McKenzie's Mountain ) feisty and mostly likable protagonists are caught up in intrigue and sheer survival, her tale of revenge in 1860s New Mexico is fairly absorbing; but when action gives way to romance, the story trades momentum for ordinary lovers' spats. Victoria Waverly, daughter of a Georgia family devastated by the Civil War, replenishes the family coffers by marrying Frank McLain, a crude New Mexican cattle rancher. Unbeknownst to Victoria, McLain acquired his ranch by murdering its previous owners. However, the dead ranchers' two sons, Jake and Ben Sarratt, escaped and now, after 20 years, are ready to take revenge on their parents' murderer and reclaim their home. Jake is working incognito as one of McLain's gunslingers when his plan is complicated by the arrival of the innocent and beautiful bride: when they kill McLain, Victoria will inherit the property. Consequently, one more step is required before the Sarratt brothers can regain their family ranch: Jake, who desperately desires Victoria, must persuade her to marry him--or he must kill her. Just a little too alpha male....by Vet_Med_Diva

December 30, 2008: I am a big Linda Howard fan, but I could only give this book three stars because the character of Jake was just a bit too alpha for my tastes. I just can't condone physical violence against a woman, no mater how provoked a person is or how sorry they are afterward. I don't know that I've ever read a romance story where the male lead was violent against his love interest (while knowing she is pregnant, no less) and then expected to be forgiven (and bedded) without much effort on his part.

I did like the spunk and courage shown by the lead female (Victoria), but the fact that she was so easily controlled by sex just didn't seem to jibe with her otherwise good judgment. Is it possible to have sex so good that it makes you forget that your lover slapped you hard enough to almost break your jaw right after you tell him you are pregnant? If that kind of sex actually exists, it should come with a warning!

I Also Recommend: Sam's Creed, Angel Creek, McKettrick's Luck, McKettrick's Pride.

October 01, 2008: Wow...when I bought this book, it was because all the books there I had already bought. I must admit, I'm not a big fan of western books, but when I started reading this I couldn't put it down, it was practically hard to put it down. At night, I would lay and just think about Jake and Voctoria, and I wanted to read it so bad when I was busy doing other things. My mom even thought I was depressed because I wanted to do nothing but sit on my bed and read. I love how Linda Howard can write 400 pages worth of book, and have everything make sense, and intertwine the tension and love with the danger and craziness of their feelings. She captures their moods and describes everything so perfect that I can literally picture the characters in my head like a movie. I love this book and for sure it won't be the last I'll read from her.
