April 11, 2003: I read this book because I saw so many good reviews and because I saw it got the Dorothy Parker Award for Excellence just last month. I thought it was one of the smartest, charming books I have read in a long time. I liked the characters, especially that adorable Peter Havistock. He can teach me about his ritual customs anytime!! Hats off for a laugh out loud rousing good time!

March 27, 2003: On the surface, this story has a great premise... after all, the cover blurb got me to buy a book by an author I'd never read. But the total disrespect I came to have for the heroine totally overshadows any originality or greatness this story could have achieved. Leslie is so weak I do not even want to refer to her as the 'heroine,' because I found nothing heroic about her. She was never proactive; instead she agonized over what everyone thought instead of thinking on her own. Everyone... mother, father, brother, ex-husband, even her subordinate at work... spoke down to her, ridiculed her, bossed her around, yet the only one she snaps at is the hero, who didn't deserve it. Peter is charming, intelligent, amusing... but he shouldn't have been forced to carry such dead weight in this match-up. The only thing wrong with Peter is that I didn't get why he would want HER. I totally didn't see the attraction, because there just wasn't enough to her to deserve him. The ONLY reason I forced myself to finish the book was that I kept waiting for Leslie to have this big personal growth revelation, come into her own and tell everyone to stick it where the sun doesn't shine, but...blah. Nothing happened except that she does an abrupt 180 on Peter so the book could have its happy ending. I was very disappointed in this book and don't remember laughing out loud even once. Not only that, but the hero and Leslie don't even spend enough time together to warrant calling this romantic fiction...she spent more time with her ex-husband! I would definitely think twice before buying this author again.
