Colonel Shropana was willing to destroy the Jorenians just to capture Dr. Cherijo Torin for the Allied League of Worldsso she felt little remorse for selling him out to brutal Hsktskt slave traders. But just as Cherijo made her escape, the man she once loved stabbed her in the backand handed her over to the same slavers.
Alone, hated, and feared by her fellow slaves, Cherijo needs all her training to save those in needa difficult task amidst the endless brutality of their captors, but a far better fate than being the League's guinea pig. As she struggles despreately to help those she can, Cherijo reminds herself that good doctors don't let personal vendettas stand in the way of duty. But then, most doctors aren't Cherijo Torin...
Colonel Shropana led the effort of the Allied League of Worlds to capture Dr. Cherijo Torin. When he threatened to destroy her homeworld of Joren and kill millions to force Cherijo to surrender, she betrayed the Leaguers only to have her husband Duncan Reever betray her to the slave trading Hsktskt. On the spaceship Perpetua, Cherijo is now Duncan's property as he is a "brother" to the Hsktskt Overlord Tssvar. Tssvar places Cherijo in charge of the medic area. Though hated by the Hsktskt, and loathed and distrusted by the Leaguers, Cherijo tries to live up to her Hippocratic Oath. That proves quite difficult when the people you treat and the staffers you supervise prefer you were dead than even saving their own life. However, even though she is almost alone, except for her friend Alunthi the Chakacat and her pet Jenner, her life in danger from just about everyone on the ship. Endurance is an exciting science fiction tale that continues the adventures of Cherijo Torin (see Stardoc and Beyond Varallen). The story line is fast-paced and exciting though new readers will need patience to fully grasp the impact of events from the previous novels that affect the circumstances of this plot. When the story line centers on a science fiction medical thriller, the novel is fantastic and readers will believe in the several alien species on board ship. When Cherijo turns into a super hero, the plot is fun to read, but more comic book-like in nature. SF fans will fully enjoy S.L. Viehl's entertaining entry in one of the better ongoing series today.

May 02, 2009: I enjoy S.L. Viehl's Stardoc series in general, since it has a female lead that has a normal yet strong personality while being very normal looking. Many men authors, in contrast, have strong female leads that are over the top. In general, they have women with big chests and perfect bodies and over the top personalities.
Endurance has a plot line that I would describe as a "Cool Chick Flick." It is very romantic without all that stupid steamy sex you would find in a typical romance novel. Albeit there is one small sex scene, but it serves the plot line. In addition, it is a good science fiction which I always enjoy. If you are a woman who enjoys fast pace science fiction and romance, I think you'll enjoy this novel.Reader Rating:

February 23, 2001: While Cherijo's commitment to 'do no harm' remains firmly in place, she takes a step away from being the Doctor Saint. And for those of you who (like me) detest Reever, there's a treat or two in store for you. Throughout the Stardoc series Cherijo gets dumped on more often than a city landfill. Usually she mouths some tough talk, then forgives the dumper and pretends nothing ever happened. In 'Endurance' she's been beaten into a corner and if she wants out she's got to fight back. She's also gotten a little tired of being the constant dumpee and starts to do something about it. What does she do? Oh no, I couldn't possibly tell you that. That'd be cheating, but you won't be disappointed.
