      Synopsis

New York Times bestseller Stuart Woods returns with a dynamic thriller starring take-no-prisoners attorney Ed Eagle.

In this new thriller featuring the colorful Santa Fe trial lawyer, Ed Eagle finds the tables turned when he testifies as a witness for the prosecution in the trial of his ex-wife, Barbara Eagle, who has been a very, very bad girl. The trial ends in a way Ed had not anticipated, and Barbara is still in a position to make his life, and that of others, a living hell.

With private detectives, hit men, double crosses, and billion-dollar bank accounts involved, Ed calls in every favor and follows every lead, no matter where it takes him. From the posh resorts of desert California and the lush wine country of Napa, to the New Mexico high country and the seedy hotels of Tijuana, Ed Eagle won’t rest until he’s discovered the truth about what Barbara is up to—and settled the score.

      Publishers Weekly

Bestseller Woods's third thriller to feature prominent New Mexican attorney Ed Eagle (after Short Strawand Santa Fe Rules) opens with a bang, but soon devolves into a fairly predictable cat-and-mouse game. Ed and his girlfriend, actress Susannah Wilde, are watching the Los Angeles trial on Court TV of his villainous ex-wife, Barbara, who stands accused of arranging for his murder, when a reporter announces that Barbara has escaped from custody just before the not guilty verdict. Soon, suitably disguised and under an alias, Barbara contrives to meet a recent widower, Palo Alto billionaire Walter Keeler, at a luxury spa and has him proposing marriage and making a new will in her favor. Meanwhile, her hatred for her ex unquenched, Barbara schemes to have Ed and Susannah killed. Bodies, innocent and otherwise, pile up, but there's little suspense about the outcome, and an improbable coincidence involving the billionaire may strike some as a plot weakness. Author tour. With several successful mystery series going at once -- the most popular featuring jet-setting cop-turned-lawyer Stone Barrington -- Stuart Woods more than manages to keep focused on a bestselling streak that shows no signs of slowing down.

July 11, 2009: None of the characters seem remotely like humans. I envisioned a writer with a deadline and a storyboard writing because he had to finish. The women do not resonate with me as a female reader. Finished the book only because I wanted to see the nuts and bolts of how it was put together. Cannot recommend.
