A tart new comedy of love and murder from the national bestselling author of Just Peachy
The man is Class A: When Gretchen Darrow awoke to a fi re in her New York City apartment, she also woke to firefighter Rick Pallucci-so cocky, so intimidating with his ice-blue eyes, and so...built. The heat is Code 4: A weaker woman might have come unglued, but not Gretchen. This California chef moved east for one reason-a plum job at The Cooking Channel, and she's not letting anything distract her ever again. Or so she thinks...
The suspect is Prime: Who knew Gretchen's new job would yield so many backstabbers, jaded divas, and one fresh corpse? The only person she has on her side is a certain sexy lug-and cracking this case is going to set off enough sparks between them to set the whole town on fire.
A gorgeous California chef and an equally gorgeous New York fireman marinate in their hormones as murder stalks The Cooking Channel. Burning curtains in a borrowed apartment lead to the cute meeting between talented chef-turned-set-supervisor Gretchen Darrow and Air Force-vet-turned-fireman Rick Pellucci in Winters's latest romance (after Just Peachy, 2005). Burned by an unhappy affair with a personal trainer at the lush California resort where she whipped up delicious lo-cal for the demanding rich, Gretchen has fled to New York and a new life working in cable television on something awfully like the real-life Food Network, where celebrated TV cooks and their enablers vie to become the next Emeril, Mario or Martha. When scented candles left lit by Gretchen's spacey actress cousin Dana ignite the drapery, it's big, hunky Rick who douses the flames. Sparks fly immediately between the two, but the flames of their lust are quickly doused by misunderstanding. By incredible coincidence, Rick is the brother of Romeo Ramero (aka Brett Pellucci), The Cooking Channel's leading culinary stud. Gretchen's dessert-diva boss Susanna has ordered Gretchen to secure her a guest spot on Romeo's primetime show, leading Rick to think that Gretchen has the hots for his shorter, oilier brother, who has appealed to Rick to find out who's been sending Brett death threats. The misunderstandings begin to clear up only after a bitchy agent is poisoned at a big party in Brett's lavish ski-chalet. Gretchen and Rick begin to explore each other's magnificent anatomies in stolen moments in elevators and pickup trucks, never quite getting it completely on thanks to roommates who barge in and elevator doors thatinconveniently open. Just when Gretchen thinks she's solved the murder, she discovers How Wrong She Can Be. The sex is hot, but the plot barely simmers.

May 09, 2006: I picked this one up expecting a fun, lite read and what I found was some refreshingly clever prose & sly humor! Lines like 'Susanna wasn't letting her off that easily. If Cady was going to scramble away pusillanimously, she wasn't going to do it with dignity' and 'Her voice was weary with frustration, as though she'd been beaten down, as though she'd been promised more from life than this (the tone was familiar by now)' had me smiling throughout. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what made this such a fresh read other than to say that the author has a strong and unique voice and a way of describing things at times that is striking. When Brett (the heartthrob) is positioned next to his bodyguard, who is posing as his cousin, Gretchen can't help but notice the lack of family resemblance. 'Brett had his share of faults, but looking like a man-eating giant wasn't one of them.' A surprisingly impressive comedic and clever read. I will be certain to check out more by this author!

April 09, 2006: After three years at a deluxe resort in Carmel, California and having just broken up with her boyfriend, Gretchen Darrow accepts a job at the Cooking Channel in New York working on the Susanna Tate show. When her cousin Dana leaves scented candles burning, their Manhattan flat catches fire. Firefighter Broderick ?Rick? Pellucci puts out the ?girlie fire? and afterward scornfully lectures Gretchen. --- Coincidentally, Rick?s brother Romeo Romero is a star on the Cooking Channel. He asks Rick to protect him from death threats that both take seriously except for those moments when the firefighter encounters Gretchen. However, Rick thinks that Gretchen wants to sue him to gain access to Romeo. Still when one of the staffers dies from poisoned mushrooms, Rick and Jill investigate finding evidence that makes his sibling the prime suspect. --- LIME RICKY is a JUST PEACHY romantic mystery starring a likable heroine and a wonderful at times grumpy male. The cozy is fun to follow as Rick with Jill?s help investigate a homicide that increasingly looks like Romeo committed the deed even as they fall in love, but he cannot accept a beauty like her would choose him over his handsome sibling. The coincidence of the Cooking Channel aside, Jill Winters concocts another tasty drink. --- Harriet Klausner
