November 04, 2007: I first read the Deryni Trilogy--Rising, Checkmate, High--in jr high. It is fairly easy to read, and I have not been as drawn in to a creative, new world til Harry Potter. Kelson is an honest, struggling-with-growing-up-while-king, admirable character. His confidante, Morgan, is loyal, protective, and somewhat irascible. In this 2nd installment, the story continues of strengthening Kelson as King, in his newfound powers, and defending himself and his magical race from the corrupt religious powers of the day. I still, 25 years later, will pick these books up and read them again and have continued to look forward to the next installment like I did in my teens.
