      Synopsis

Meet Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton. She's the house-rich, money-poor keeper of the manor—and keeper of the peace...

In World War II England, the quiet village of Sitting Marsh is faced with food rations and fear for loved ones. But Elizabeth Hartleigh Compton, lady of the Manor House, stubbornly insists that life must go on. Sitting Marsh residents depend on Elizabeth to make sure things go smoothly. Which means everything from sorting out gossip to solving the occasional murder...

In the thick of the Allied invasion, Elizabeth is sick with worry for Major Earl Monroe. To make matters worse, people and things keep going missing from the manor—namely Martin, the elderly butler, and ladies’ knickers from the washing line. Before Elizabeth can track either down, a man is found shot dead. Few will miss bad-tempered Clyde Morgan, and the police are ready to call it a suicide. But Elizabeth’s not so sure…

August 20, 2006: I agree with Tammy (post before me) I felt that a lot of things were left hanging. Such a boring ending. Such a let-down from the others in the series.

August 16, 2006: I relished each release of Kate Kingsbury's Manorhouse Series, but her final farewell to this wonderful series was disappointing. I won't go into details to ruin it for anyone, but the ending is not believable. Especially where a couple of the more stubborn, crochety characters are concerned. We're also left hanging as to what happens to the two girls working at the Manorhouse and other villagers as the war is still going on at the end. Also, there isn't any return of a long-lost love for one of the girls, as I thought there would be. Some of the characters' ends are tied up too neatly to the point of being unbelievable, while other characters are left hanging. I wish this series could have gone out with a bang, but sadly it ends with a whimper. :(
