Lies muddle the life of a Boston break-up artist. Dani Myers has few friends, a royally dysfunctional family and a job that causes her great embarrassment. As a communications specialist at Your Big Break, a Boston agency specializing in delivering unpleasant news, Dani makes a swell living ditching boyfriends and girlfriends on behalf of guilt-ridden lovers. Since her own love life is dormant, Dani obsesses over the romantic plights of her family and her clients. Feeling her true gift is for bringing couples together, she makes fumbling attempts to resuscitate dying relationships and spark the flames of new romance. Her efforts land her in trouble at work when her meddling causes Dani to bungle two new cases. A potential client wants Dani to break off her romance with a married man. The dumpee turns out to be Dani's father. Acting like a distressed teen, Dani refuses the case and decides to spy on her father, unearthing dark secrets in her parents' marriage. Another promising client enlists Dani's skills to break up with a handsome, mild-mannered teacher whose fatal flaw is a meager back account. Dani opts for an anonymous break-up note, conveniently freeing her to date the newly eligible bachelor. Hiding the truth about her job from her new love and her family does no good, and ust when it seems like all relationships are a sham and everyone in the novel is doomed to remain lonely forever, Edwards contrives a syrupy ending reliant on convenient, cloyingly simplistic resolutions. Edwards (The Next Big Thing, 2005) can't even come up with innovative date ideas; the novel is full of meetings at Starbucks and Au Bon Pain. It'll take a lot of caffeine to make it through this safelyconstructed snooze.
