A young knight will take up his sword for the honor of a beautiful and mysterious princess-and risk his life for the love that burns between them.
The magnificent new novel by the New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow and the Star. A young English knight caught in the plots and secrets of court life faces certain death until Princess Melanthe takes pity on him, gifting the stranger with two emeralds. As the legendary Green Knight, he will return to fight for her honor. Original.
Ruck, an invincible English knight, loses his new wife when she declares herself a prophet and pledges her life to the Church. Ruck's attention now falls to the Princess Melanthe, the shrewd, widowed head of the powerful Monteverde family in Italy and to whom he swears allegiance. But Gian, the patriarch of the equally powerful Navona family, plans to marry Melanthe and merge their two kingdoms, and he will murder anyone who jeopardizes his plan. Thirteen years later, Ruck meets Melanthe again and joins the princess's entourage as they journey to reach her estate before Gian catches up with her. On the way, she reveals to Ruck that his wife was burned as a heretic. Melanthe and Ruck exchange wedding vows and consummate the marriage. But the potential repercussions of their union and an advancing plague threaten them, so the two escape to Ruck's estate, which he struggles to reclaim since it was lost through legal confusion. The honeymoon bliss doesn't last long because they have been seen by someone who alerts Gian, who isn't ready to let Melanthe go. Kinsale's ( The Shadow and the Star ) tale is light on vitality and heavy on Middle English, plot twists and tedium. (Dec.)
More Reviews and RecommendationsLaura Kinsale is a winner and multiple nominee for the Best Book of the Year award given by the Romance Writers of America. She became a romance writer after six years as a geologist a career which consisted of getting out of bed in the middle of the night and driving hundreds of miles alone across west Texas to sit at drilling rigs, wear a hard hat, and attempt to boss around oil-covered males considerably larger than herself. This, she decided, was pushing her luck.

November 25, 2009: Like an ancient tapestry of chivalrous life, this dense novel teems with colorful characters: Melanthe, a complicated wealthy English princess struggling to survive murderous political intrigue and avoid an unwanted marriage to Don Gian of Navona; Ruck (Ruadrik), her heroic Green Knight who takes his vows to heart; and the mysterious assassin Allegreto, bastard son of Don Gian, assigned by his father to protect Melanthe and monitor her doings. The plague and bandits are always to be feared, and Ruck saves Melanthe over and over again from these dangers. Sole survivors - so they believe - they embark on a difficult journey ending at Ruck's hidden castle Wolfscar where they wed. But the murderous Don Gian prevails and to save Ruadrik, Melanthe leaves him and publicly denies their troth. Yet the Green Knight (green no more) won't be left and he uses the law and the boon of his king to assert his rights and prevent the impending nuptials. All will work out for the lovers, but not before additional challenges to Ruadrik and Allegreto of poisoned wine and daggers, rigged tournaments, near drowning, imprisonment, et al. For My Lady's Heart is not a quick read - indeed it's a challenging one - but it's worth the journey.
