A Scandalous Elopement
The Marquis of Templeton has faced every sort of danger in his work for the King, but chasing after a wayward spinster who's had the effrontery to run off with the wrong man hardly seems worth his considerable talents. But when the heiress in question is none other than Lady Diana Fordham, Temple is about to meet his match. Tempestuous and passionate, headstrong and opinionated, the lady is everything a man should avoid...
A Dangerous Plan
Diana has no intention of making Temple's assignment easy. In fact she has every reason to turn his life upside down just as he did to hers when he broke her heart years ago. Now it's Diana's turn to give Temple a lesson in love, from a teasing glance to a scandalous embrace. However, as she leads him on a merry chase from London to Gretna Green, they soon realize that a kiss once given is hard to forget, and a rekindled passion is impossible to deny.
Tired of waiting for the Marquis of Templeton to come to his senses and marry her, Lady Diana Fordham, the brassy heroine of this cookie-cutter Regency-era romance, devises a plot to ensnare him. Her plan: to run away with a man of ill-repute and wait for Temple, who acts like a typical London fop but is really a fearless undercover agent, to rescue her. A spirited spinster, Diana is one of the few people who knows Temple's true profession, and she has been pining after him ever since she learned the truth. Though Temple is reluctant to fall in line with her plan, he has little choice in the matter when his boss, a good friend of Diana's father, orders him to save her. His mission turns deadly, however, when a fanatical Frenchman, who wants Diana for his own mysterious purposes, enters the picture. Boyle crowds her tale with stock characters-a hero who is brave except when it comes to matters of the heart; a heroine who defies convention at every turn; and a villain who exudes evil from every pore. Add to the mix a pair of bumbling ancillary characters known as "pins and needles," who long to marry Diana, and you have a frothy confection buoyed by witty dialogue but weighed down with predictable plot turns and unremarkable characters. July 18, 2009: But it was a long haul to read of the 10 years of unresolved attraction between the Marquis of Templeton and Lady Diana Fordham. Pretend fop Temple is a successful spy for the foreign office; he's always pressed for ready cash trying to be independent of the influence of his hard-hearted, destructive grandfather. He had almost offered for Diana at age 20 but feared his grandfather would destroy them (as he did Temple's parents). Feisty Diana has waited patiently for the penniless Temple - she knows his foppishness is a cover for the dangers he runs. But patience at an end, she pushes things in an adventurous lengthy elopement to Gretna Green with Temple and several vying suitors in tow and two very determined French kidnappers (Diana is not who she seems) hot on their heels.

May 21, 2003: In 1809 England most of the Ton considers twenty-nine years old Lady Diana Fordham as a spinster with no chance of marrying. Her peers have shelved her, but her enormous dowry makes Diana still a fine catch for anyone short in the pockets. However, Diana does not want a spouse, as her heart was broken years ago by a man she still loves.
All hell breaks loose when her father frantically announces that a rogue has kidnapped his daughter taking her to Gretna Green. Most of the aristocracy cannot believe an old maid like Diana can be abducted so they ignore Lord Fordham?s rant. However, some reconsider when he announces the man who saves Diana will marry her.
The Marquis of Templeton, known as the 'Temple' of foppish good fashion, is upset because secretly he loves Diana. However he rationalizes that he must not act on his feelings because of the danger of his profession as a spy that might place his beloved in danger. The Foreign Office orders a reluctant and irate Temple to insure that Diana is rescued and safely married. When he catches up to her he finds an incredibly brilliant counter move by a strategist who makes Napoleon look like a bonehead as the clever ploy shakes his heart to the core.
STEALING THE BRIDE will steal the hearts of Regency romance readers due to the final desperate fling of the heroine. Diana is a strong individual who knows what she wants. The audience will feel some frustration over Temple allowing his childhood demons to interfere with a relationship with Diana. Still this is a fun historical that fans will appreciate.
