December 19, 2004: Deeply emotional, filled with yearning and longing, pain and hope, Coming Home made me laugh and cry, many times over. Jean Brashear tells the story of a family shattered by the accidental death of a child with her usual lyrical grace, but a new depth of feeling and characterization. This is the story of Cleo and Malcolm, whose marriage fell apart five years ago when their young son, David, died at the hands of their eldest daughter, Ria. They lost not only their son but each other, through the process of pain and grieving; and they lost their daughter as well. Living with nearly unbearable guilt, Ria has carved a hard, unforgiving life for herself and her small son. When circumstances finally push her to return to the family she?s certain despises her, life is utterly changed for all involved. Brashear?s writing is a joy to read. As in all her books that I?ve read, her prose is closer to poetry. She is a master at eliciting emotional responses from her reader while artfully exploring the minds and hearts of her characters. The best part is, Coming Home ends in something of a cliffhanger (though still managing to be a very satisfying ending!) that will lead into Brashear?s next book, due out in spring of ?05. I can?t wait to read it!
